What is EDI?
EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange. It is a standard for the electronic exchange of business documents such as purchase orders, invoices and shipping notices. The exchange takes place mainly between two companies or business partners.
EDI standards
To communicate through EDI with your business partners, it is important to determine first which EDI standard has to be used by both parties. Indeed, it influences the way EDI notifications are built up and the procedures to follow.
EDI has been around for over 30 years and there are many EDI standards, some of which are designed for specific industries or regions. Some of the key EDI standards are:
The ANSI ASC X12 (X12) standard is the main standard in North America.
Recommended by UN, UN / EDIFACT is the only international standard and is the most important standard outside North America.
EANCOM is a set of standards developed by GS1 and is mainly applied in Global Supply Chains.
The ODETTE standard is used in the European automotive industry.
The TRADACOMS standard was developed by the ANA (Article Number Association) now known as GS1 UK. This standard is mainly being applied in the British retail industry.
The VDA standard is being applied in the European automotive industry, mainly in Germany.
HL7 is an international standard for electronic exchange of medical, financial and administrative information between health information systems.
What are the benefits of EDI?
A transition from a paper-based exchange of documents to a digital format provides great advantages. Organizations that use EDI are able to reduce their costs, improve their order processing and reduce manual errors when entering data. Respectively, these outcomes will enhance the collaboration with their business partners.
